2014-15 NCCU Open County Championships

Yorkshire retained the NCCU title with a performance of authority and conviction.

After a slightly nervy start providing a hint of initiative to the visitors, the home team neutralised a couple of dangerous positions and conceded three early draws. Jim Burnett appeared to generate good winning chances but was unable to convert on this occasion. Phil Watson, however, delivered smoothly with the black pieces; and once Matthew Webb celebrated his first appearance in the vanguard by overwhelming an accomplished and well-prepared opponent Yorkshire appeared to have matters under control. The debutant Harry Li held firm in a melee with the experienced and tricky Bob Newton, before further wins from Richard Palliser and Peter Shaw put the match beyond doubt.

Steady wins for Matthias Gantner and Mark Birkin added a satisfactory gloss to the final scoreline.

This victory earns the team a bye to the semi-finals of the elimination phase, probably leading to a face-off against one of the southern counties at a neutral venue on 13th June.

    Good result that!

A repeat of the title must be very achievable given how very strong the squad is just now. Hopefully you can get enough of the stronger people together for that semi final that folk like me aren’t needed :)

Win takes us straight to a semi-final on June 13th. Holidays and other engagements always come into the reckoning at that time of year, so don’t give up on the chance of a phone call just yet…
