York RI C 2½ vs York RI A 5½

Well a derby match. Not as objectively threatening as the ones from back in the heyday of York B, but these things are never, ever, as easy as you’d think.

Especially not when we had an earlyish surprise on the bottom boards – with York C being 2-1 up with 3 results in. Not that those results were such a surprise. York’s strength in depth at the moment is truly admirable and the C team definitely weren’t weak on 7/8. Board 8 was comprehensive, board 7 a slight surprise when Akis’ position turned bad quite suddenly. David equaliser for us by winning on board 2.

The rest of the match went much more to plan – some modest scares on some boards, including some hair raising clock handling in Jim’s game, but we were always going to get enough points to get home.

Josh’s defence was worth commendation I think – he had accidentally attempted to castle kingside through check(!) and had to instead castle queenside bang into Jim’s planned minority attack.

So, well placed at Christmas, but some big work to do in the new year to retain our trophy. The C teams meanwhile are fighting hard but definitely have an uphill challenge with all around them gaining points.

Hull DCA A 3 vs Calderdale A 5

Calderdale travelled to Hull with its strongest team of the season needing to win to get out of any relegation fears. The whole team played its part against a good Hull team the top 6 boards were drawn Mark Whitehead won on 7 and yours truly played a decent game on board 8. Thanks go to Dave Mills for the buffet much appreciated.

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Harrogate A 3 vs Leeds CCCC A 5

In the pre-match discussion we (Archer & Hirst) thought our targets should be the top boards where we outgraded Harrogate, this proved to be the case, where we won 3/4, only losing on board 3, where Robert seemed to have a great position, but couldn’t find a killer blow.

Good win for York B in the IMBrown – Calderdale B had a pretty solid team with Calderdale A being so strong for their match at Hull.

Awfully good Sheffield B team for their drawn match at Bradford, if only a 7 man one.

Even actually outgraded a perfectly solid Bradford team over the boards played – 178 to 176 – with Mort presumed scheduled for board 8.

They’ve a decent draw from here and I’d back them to get past the (tentative!) safety mark of 6 to maybe 8.

Alwoodley look gone, so its between York C vs Harrogate I suppose.
