Calderdale A 7½ vs Huddersfield ½
Huddersfield were missing 6 regulars which made Calderdale strong favourites for the match so it proved to be we had a comfortable win, although the final margin flattered us.Two vital points think 8 may be enough just need two more !

York RI A 2 vs Sheffield A 6
Well, that didn’t quite go to plan This match wasn’t quite a chance to wrap the Woodhouse up but winning it would have left us big favourites.
Knowing our team, the match itself was always likely to be 50/50 on paper, and so it proved. It was actually a really close match over the board for a long time too, but obviously didn’t end that way!
The first game to finish was Dave drawing with Woodford and the first blood was Oskar finishing off Chris who seemed to lose a pawn then try to hold a rather unlikely R&B vs Q ending. That was shortly followed by Detlef managing to convert quite a nice positional game, leaving things equal at 1.5 – 1.5.
So it stayed for a long time, with most of those games looking very even. Unfortunately somewhere in between my vanishing into my game to hit the time control and passing it things went very wrong for us.
There were major blunders on 1 and 8 while 2/6 drifted away rather.
I often lose heart once a match results is decided but this time tried very hard to convert my better ending vs Michael – the game points are obviously potential gold dust. It looked very promising, but he defended very well to hold it.
At least our destiny is technically our own, even if a 1.5 game point lead is hardly secure! Especially with our very tough remaining matches. Makes it exciting again I guess

Sheffield B 6 vs Rose Forgrove A 2
Always good from a ‘win the match’ perspective to start with a default on bottom board… not so good from a ‘let’s actually play chess’ perspective and bad news for Steve, who was literally entering the playing room when I called him to let him know his services were no longer required. At least it was a home match – and we’re not exactly strangers to the bottom board default ourselves this season so for once the boot was on the other foot.
After the uplifting win against Alwoodley last time around, I had been obliged to make two changes with Daniel and Peong unavailable; Carl and the aforementioned Steve stepped in, our middle order all moved up a board, and with Rose Forgrove missing a couple we appeared to have a slight grading edge overall. And so it proved over the boards with only one of our team ever looked in dire straits (yours truly of course).
Peter and Mark were relatively quickly into a double rook endgame; 6 pawns each when I noted it in my book. 6 pawns vs 2 a little while later as Mark’s 2nd proved somewhat more vulnerable to a rook pair than Peter’s. Too much to turn around and after a couple of tactical tries Mark resigned.
Jim picked up a pawn against Trevor in a French fairly early on and retained that slight edge through to a queenless late middlegame. Trevor’s dogged resistance kept Jim’s a-pawn at bay and a draw was agreed.
So top two boards the first to finish and we were 2.5 – 0.5 up. The remaining 5 boards played on for some time. I spent a lot of that time fretting over Tom’s kingside and concerned he was a pawn down for not much compensation…until at some point around 5pm Andy pointed out to me Tom had one more bishop than Roger. That extra bishop proved critical, unsurprisingly, and a forced queen exchange allowed Tom to hoover up some pawns and end the game.
Not long afterwards, we were guaranteed at least a point when Andy and Keith reached a locked position; all rook and pawn endings are drawn. You can add this one to the list. Three boards to go – Carl and Clive engaged in a battle of the passed pawns; Carl’s further up the board and his heavy pieces better placed and enough to queen first and seal the match.
At this point I still thought I might be able to hold on in a 2MP + 3p endgame; I’ll check on Fritz in a short while but my suspicion is I took the wrong pawn and left one knight sidelined as Michael found a way to exert just enough pressure to win a critical pawn and force one of his over the line. 5-2 and just John left to finish – the usual flurry of tactics had won him the exchange and some neat defending left him rook vs bishop in the ending; giving back the exchange was enough to win as Andy’s king was offside and would not be able to stop John’s h-pawn from queening.
So a great result and an unusually large win over Rose Forgrove A; matches with them are usually very tight affairs and with 6pts on the board now I feel well placed to suggest we’ll get a chance to take them on in the Woodhouse again next year!
