Bob Newton annotates his crazy game from the 4NCL

4NCL

In the first weekend of the 4NCL, the match between Cheddleton 2 and Manchester Manticores 2 saw one of the craziest games I have ever seen! The clash on Board 2 saw Malcolm Armstrong take on Bob Newton, Bob was making his debut in the 4NCL.

Bob has kindly sent us the game with his annotations. This game is definitely worth the effort to spend some time studying, it will give you a good workout!

Wonderful fun yes. I almost couldn’t stop laughing whenever I had a look at it when wandering past :)

Nice annotations too – it’d be very easy to throw a computer at it without really finding anything properly relevant. Especially around moves 36 and 42 – it won’t have been that Bob worked everything possible between those moves out, you just pick the patterns amid the chaos out and try to make them work…..

You really do need to be incredibly mentally strong to do it nowadays of course.

You’re inevitably going to lose quite a few games and with computers lurking to laugh at your play after the game all the time?

If Bob “Russian Roulette” Newton doesn’t invigorate chess players’ love for the game then it’s time to pack up board n pieces! It reminds me of a game strong blind player John Gallagher played against junior Harry Li (not quite as wild as this game). At about move 30, John feverishly ran his fingers over his adapted chess board for 20 minutes before proudly declaring “I haven’t got a clue what’s going on”. It would have been wonderful to hear the players thoughts during Bob’s game like the old BBC Mastergame series. I’d imagine it would go something like…”I’m winning this”..”No I’m not”…”Yes I am”…”What’s he doing?”.. “What am I doing?!”
