British Rapidplay 2015 Preview

British Rapidplay 2015 Preview

The British Rapidplay 2015 is taking place this weekend at Leeds Beckett University. As always there are four sections in the main Rapidplay which takes place over 11 rounds in two days. There are also several junior events taking place; on Saturday England Under 11 Trial Qualifier and on Sunday there is the U16 and U12 British Rapidplays.

There is one significant change to the event for this year as digital clocks will be used through the whole event with a new Fischer time control. Instead of the previous 30 minutes for the whole game, players will now have 20 minutes + 10 seconds per move to make all their moves. This still leaves 30 minutes for a 60 move game but the players will have to allocate their time differently. Also, there should be no frantic time scrambles but you may see players trying to win Rook and Bishop vs Rook for 170 moves!

As of Thursday evening, the entry list in the Open is headed by 6-time champion GM Mark Hebden. Hot on his heels will be last year’s runner-up, IM Ameet Ghasi who famously became the youngest ever winner of the title in 2000 aged just 13! The other main contenders will likely be IM Simon Ansell, IM Daniel Fernandez and FM Joseph McPhillips.

The Rapidplay will be broadcasting the top 8 boards from the each round of the Open live. We’ll also be posting updates to our Twitter feed so stay tuned!

    Not entering this year,

I’m sorry but its just become too expensive.

£44 to play in the open, is just ridiculous.
