There is a lot of chess activity in the coming weeks and it all kicks off this weekend.

Silver Rook

Some of our local players are taking part in Silver Rook matches. Bradford C entertain West Leeds at the Latvian Club while leaders Pontefract try to continue their great start against Sheffield F.

World Championship

For those of you who aren’t involved in Yorkshire league chess this weekend perhaps you would like to follow the World title match between the current world champion Vishwanathan Anand and the current world number 1 player, Magnus Carlsen.
Here is a snippet from an article on Chess.com which should get you in the mood. The full article can be seen here:  www.worldchesschampionship2013.com/2013/11/legendary-garry-kasparov-goes-harry
I am no bearded Dumbledore, but it was impossible not to see Magnus as a type of Harry Potter, a super-talent destined to become one the greatest and to leave a deep mark (a lightning bolt?) on our ancient game. Carlsen enters the match as the obvious favorite despite his inexperience simply based on how superior his chess performance of the past few years has been to that of Anand, who has declined from his peak in every observable way. Nor can history be ignored. Carlsen is exactly half Anand’s age and the new generation is rarely turned back.
Mark Crowther also has a great preview of the match in TWIC.
Matches start around 9:30am and can be followed live. There is even an App for Android phones available.

European Team Championships

The England men’s team is seeded as high as fourth in this year’s European championships which starts this weekend in Warsaw, Poland.
As Mark points out it could be because some of the top players will be involved in one of the teams of seconds for the World championship battle. The men’s team is fielding a full strength team with Adams, McShane, Short and Howell all playing. Local interest lies with Gawain Jones and White Rose star Peter Wells who captains the team. I really hope the team can make a challenge for the medals again and I will be following their games when I can.

The initial decision was that England could not afford to send a ladies team to Poland. Thankfully this problem has been resolved and we are sending an interesting team hungry for norms and success.
Follow the teams on the official site.

Former Yorkshire Chess Association President and Secretary. I'm not the brains of the editorial team but I can live with being a glorified typist as well as the resident grammar pedant. I have captained Bradford A in the Woodhouse cup for over 30 years. I'm fairly easy going, sometimes diplomatic and I think my enthusiasm is infectious but not life threatening. The English chess world needs to wake up and smell the coffee before league chess collapses altogether.
