Leeds Chess Congress – 15th-17th July 2016

Leeds Chess Congress

There is less than one week to go before the 5th Leeds Chess Congress takes place at the Wellington Hill Residents Association. This recently-founded event has attracted diverse fields as it has proved to be an ideal warm-up event for the British Championships or a way for players to keep their eye in during the off-season.

David Welch is the Chief Arbiter and the time control is 36 moves in 90 minutes, followed by a 15 minute quickplay finish.

You can find out more details on the Official Website.

I hope the number of entries is greater than it appears to be! I posted my entry a few days ago although my name isn’t showing on the website.

I asked them to update the website as it might assist with gaining entries but sadly it seems as if they’ve not been able to.

The Congress has previously attracted a decent attendance so I don’t see why this year should be different.

Turn out was as per normal for congresses, 25-30 in each section.

The congress was well run, an enjoyable weekend.

Mike Surtees and I had 3.5/4 in the final round. He beat me to take first place; I think Lee Kay and Jim Burnett shared second with 4/5.

That’s in the Open of course – I don’t know about the other sections!

Yes, I don’t know why – I find it can be a bit noisy in the Open room.

I thought you took a bye on Friday night – Rounds 2-5 felt like complete silence compared to round 1!

I did indeed – I remembered children running round outside on Friday evening from previous years :)

But putting it in perspective the conditions at the venue are generally good (and coffee £0.50 compared to £3 at a 4NCL hotel!) and the heat was tolerable with the windows open in my opinion. It probably wouldn’t have been yesterday though!

It wasn’t that bad on Friday night.

    OK maybe it was,

    The screams, the terrible screams.

    They haunt my dreams.

On a more serious note, I found the heat on Sunday more distracting.
