New Column in the Yorkshire Post

yorkshire-post-logo

We recently celebrated our fourth birthday and we’ve got some very exciting news to share!

Yorkshire Post

After extensive negotiations we have been commissioned by the Yorkshire Post to write a weekly column about Yorkshire chess for their Saturday supplement. Every Saturday, the biggest selling regional newspaper will feature both the latest news and a puzzle. It will be all about Yorkshire chess, featuring your games and the chess events that you play in and make happen!

While we won’t be reproducing the articles on the website, we intend to write an accompanying article here each week which will expand on games and provide additional detail. This will be published within a couple of days of the Yorkshire Post column being published.

We need your help!

This is a fantastic opportunity and it is up to you to make this work. We want news on chess events, local chess reports and puzzles from your games. We want to highlight all that is great about Yorkshire chess from Sheffield to Harrogate, from Halifax to York, from Hull to Doncaster. This is a great opportunity to highlight to the people of Yorkshire just what a great game chess really is!

The first column will be coming out this Saturday, 17th October. (Ed. The online version will appear on Sunday 18th October) Please mention it to all your clubmates and buy yourself a copy! If you like the column, please let the Yorkshire Post know!

We’ll be sharing the writing between the website editorial team. Ihor has written the column for this Saturday.

Later on in the season, we might also be asking people to write a column about their local leagues.

    Definitely well done :)

There’s a few obvious things to get in early of course – County championship wins (Yorkshire triumph vs the south :)), European club cup (Yorkshire vs whatever, if almost certainly rather less triumphant!).

Gawain getting to play Carlsen at the world blitz champs even.

Or does it only count if it actually takes place in Yorkshire?

Our remit is going to be anything related to Yorkshire chess and having our county represented in Europe certainly falls under that umbrella

Ha ha Martin. We wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise this Saturday but you wouldn’t be a million miles away with your suggestions.

The column would be run mainly by the website team but Andy is the main contact. We hope to have guest contributors and have planned articles a few weeks ahead.

David Hurst of Leeds CCCC deserves huge credit for his effort over a long period of time to get this up and running.

David Hirst deserves even more credit than Geoff Hurst does! ;)

This is a great opportunity for all Yorkshire players to sell the game of chess to a 40,000+ readership!

Well done to all and especially Dave. You have acheived far more than the ECF, who have no Director for Publicity I don’t know how you did it but a huge congratulations to all. As I write for the column for the Halifax Courier, I would love to forward any signifcant one to the Yorkshire Oost, will you send me the email address I can forward it too please?

there should also be opportunity for players who are not a member of a chess club to be able to put their thoughts, comments and ideas about chess into the weekly article, after all…we are all chess players.

Thanks for your comment David. We’re well aware that the chess community is much wider than those playing regularly in clubs which is why we’re so excited to have a forum that can reach a much wider audience than usual.

We’d be grateful for any suggestions that people may have.

However I can’t promise that we can utilise them all as we’ve got a relatively small amount of column inches once a week, so there’s only so much we can do!
