Player of the month

Player of the month

My player of the month for May is Bill Clark of Leeds CCCC and Bradford Spitfires.

Bill has won all 4 games this month but what important games they were.
He sealed victory for his Bradford league team in the Hepolite Plate final and followed that up with victory to get his Leeds CCCC team into the final of the Leeds league equivalent event. He was also one of the key victories to set up the Under 160 county match victory over Essex. Bill has won his last 8 games in a row to cap a tremendous end to the season. This late flurry has realised an increase of 7 grading points to Bill’s YCA grade this month.
Former player of the month, Matthew Webb, continues to impress. His league wins include a victory over International Master Richard Palliser and three terrific wins for White Rose 2 in the 4NCL. He capped this off with winning the Calderdale open with 4.5 out of 5 and he helped Bradford chess club win the team lightning event with 5 out of 5. Matthew has been surprised at how well his form has been but explains his theory about it in this tremendous article.

Bradford league President, John Holliday, has finished the league season in style winning all three of his games in May including a win in the Hepolite plate final.

David Teague of Harrogate chess club has also seen a jump in his rating of 7 points. He was unbeaten in the Whitby minor event.
Colin W Field playing for the Willows in the Hull and District league is another big hitter this month. Colin scored 2.5 out of 3 and won his game in the Jubilee Cup final but it wasn’t enough as his team lost out on the handicap.

Steve Tomlinson of Beverley chess club scored an impressive 3 out of 4 while Darwin Ursal won both his matches in May including a crucial Hepolite Cup final game which earned his Bingley team a replay.
During the summer months it might be harder to find a player of the month due to most leagues taking the summer off so I really need your help to alert me to players who you think have excelled. An interesting debate has continued on the forum about a player of the season award. We are considering this on the editorial team and will publish information about it soon.

Former Yorkshire Chess Association President and Secretary. I'm not the brains of the editorial team but I can live with being a glorified typist as well as the resident grammar pedant. I have captained Bradford A in the Woodhouse cup for over 30 years. I'm fairly easy going, sometimes diplomatic and I think my enthusiasm is infectious but not life threatening. The English chess world needs to wake up and smell the coffee before league chess collapses altogether.

Surely best to give it a rest over the summer? Not really enough chess many months.

I guess there’s the British for one month which I guess will have a few from Yorkshire in it.

Perhaps! This is however one of the best articles which has pleasingly found itself a regular feature on our site…

I closely monitor our web traffic to see which pages/posts receive the most visits and also which have the longest view duration, these monthly updates are certainly up there!

On a side note we’re hoping to get more contributors for next season, we want the site to stay interesting and full of innovate ideas and discussion topics. If one person from every club in Yorkshire made one contribution per season, be it; sending pictures, results, games or a write up, we’d have more content than we could possibly dream of, this is of course what we’re aiming towards.

Keep the player of the month Leeds-centric. The rest of us can slip in under the radar and catch opponents unawares.

Not sure if you’re getting a little confused, there wasn’t any issues or “controversy”, not from the Bradford Knights vs Bingley encounter anyway – I was there.
