Player of the Month

My player of the month for April is a youngster from the Sheffield area. Arjun Babu.

Arjun has scored a highly impressive 6 wins from his 6 games this month as well as featuring strongly in the Doncaster Major Rapid play event finishing a mere half point away from the winner with 4.5 from 6 games.

Another Sheffield player, Daniel Sullivan, has impressed this month taking draws off some of the region’s top players in Jon Nelson, Dave Latham and Jim Burnett. Daniel finished the month by beating Robert Murray.

Mark Priest of Alwoodley has also foiled a couple of high class opponents this month earning hard draws against Richard Palliser and Taka Chipanga.

Last month’s winner Matthew Webb and Adam Lang of Bradford chess club have both scored 3 wins in 3. Dave Adams of York and Ecclesall also achieved 3 victories to show great form.

Bill Clark of Leeds CCCC is another to score 3 out of 3 and he has improved his rating by 13 points this month and has been unbeaten since January. But he isn’t the highest climber. That goes to two players from South Yorkshire who increased by 15 points in April alone. Well done Neil Shaw of Barnby Dun and Jonathan Devine of Chesterfield.

A 12 point increase was earned by Alan Metcalf of Dewsbury for his 2.5 in 3 games while Kevin Plaxton and Ismet Berisha also had big rises for similar scores.

Samuel Milson won the Doncaster Rapid in a tough field with an impressive 5.5 points and Trevor Braithwaite scored 5 out of 6 in the same competition.

Stan Aleksandrowicz of Rose Forgrove scored 4.5 in the Doncaster Rapid Major section and added 2.5 in his 3 Leeds league matches.

Finally two other players that caught my eye are Robin Browne who scored an impressive 4 out of 5 this month for Leeds CCCC and Ilkley, while Frank Sheldrick played himself back into some good form with 3 wins in 4 games which included the huge scalp of Phil Watson.

There has been some interesting discussions on the forum about the criteria to decide the player of the season. Feel free to let us know what you think should be the most important aspects to feature.

Take a look at our previous winners of player of the month to see if you agree with my selections so far.

I have captained Bradford A in the Woodhouse cup for over 30 years. I'm fairly easy going, sometimes diplomatic and I think my enthusiasm is infectious but not life threatening. The English chess world needs to wake up and smell the coffee before league chess collapses altogether.
