<p style=”text-align: justify;”><span style=”color: #000000;”>Another close match against Leeds strengthened by the addition of two 200 players who have not played all season just our luck! We were helped by one of the opposition going to the home venue by mistake.A good win for Tim and draw for Pete, little else to shout about unfortunately.Looks like we need an a to z of Donny for next season.Happy Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all

York RI C 5½ vs Calderdale A 2½

A really disappointing result against a good York C team with no winners. The team is all trying hard but I don’t understand how we can go from top 4 to relegation favourites in a few years with same squad of players.I could do with a magic wand for Christmas to restore team confidence and morale.

York RI C 5½ vs Calderdale A 2½

what a performance out graded on every board but not a single loss to drag us out of the inevitable relegation and to finally give us a win we deserved. half of the Calderdale team got stuck in traffic and turned up 30 minuets late. board 1. Mathew played a great middle game as sacking a pawn in the opening Phil then gave the pawn back and Mathew played a very nice Knight and 5 against a bad bishop and 5 Board 2 myself against Martin very interesting opening where martin was better but I got back into the middle game where the game lost its spark draw agreed Board 3 two Richard playing each other everything got swopped of and quick draw was agreed board 4 very lively Alex was the exchange up but 3 pawns each a draw agreed Board 5 tony playing mark Mark had a very good opening and was much better tony played it Really and a draw was agreed Board 6 saw the most exiting with lots of sacks and giving of pieces which saw Barry come out the better 1-0 Board 7 adam drew with J morgan the last game to finnish the match result already known Board 8 noel sacked a rook in a combo to be the exchange up and as dave was so short of time in the end great result for York C Report by Rich A

Bradford A 0 vs York RI A 8

People might struggle to believe this given the result but I was a little nervous before this – Bradford has just beaten Sheffield A in Sheffield after all, and our team was ‘merely’ very strong.

As it happens Bradford were a bit weaker this time out, and we played very well.

I won a slightly stodgy game fairly early, then the rest of the games all went up to at least near the time control and many beyond.

In some ways it was all awfully thematic – Dave won on 4 with a load of quite cute short term tactics, Mike Bramson went all in against Gavyn’s king and came up short and Detlef and Jim won after long, controlled grinds.

Simon won what seemed to be a very nice game on board 1, ending with a queen sacrifice to force mate.

Still, you don’t win by 8-0 –
something I don’t remember us every doing before – without a good chunk of luck.

That came on board 2 where Alan pressed for a good while but tried an over optimistic piece sacrifice and on 5 where Chris (B) seemed to have a really nice position but fell for a rather nasty tactic.

Absent a massive Forgrove win that’s put us on top of the table. Still a lot of work ahead to end the season there.

Former Yorkshire Chess Association President and Secretary. I'm not the brains of the editorial team but I can live with being a glorified typist as well as the resident grammar pedant. I have captained Bradford A in the Woodhouse cup for over 30 years. I'm fairly easy going, sometimes diplomatic and I think my enthusiasm is infectious but not life threatening. The English chess world needs to wake up and smell the coffee before league chess collapses altogether.

This is all making relegation fascinating. I’m rather more confident than David is that Calderdale will come good :) (surely?!).

Still a bit worried for both York teams despite that very fine result from York C vs Calderdale. The next few rounds of fixtures are very tough for both and there may well be some catching up to do in Spring.

Must be lots of teams looking over their shoulders though. Harrogate + 1 for promotion it seems.

Do we know if Huddersfield vs Sheffield B was played or not? Given the weather it’d rate as no massive surprise if it got postponed.

The Huddersfield game isn’t on Chessnuts either.

I know the Alwoodley B and Bfd B game has been postponed until next week though.

    Hi Martin

I requested a postponement – the forecast wasn’t *too* bad but I was concerned about the expected snow showers followed by sub-zero temperatures from around 6pm onwards and of late the poorer weather seems to have been coming on earlier than predicted so I wanted to avoid being stranded over in Huddersfield or worse, having an accident on the way home. I believe it’s going to the committee to decide whether that was a reasonable request or not as Richard didn’t agree with the postponement (as is his right – we had a chat about it on the day) – as it turned out the weather didn’t turn out to be quite as bad as expected (although there were some flurries in Sheffield that hadn’t been forecast) but not sure whether that matters – hindsight is always 20:20 :-)

Oh blimey. Matthias and Harry Li making random(?) guest appearances too :)

Calderdale could definitely go down if they don’t start winning soon – they’ve got Sheffield A & York A in their last 3 matches….. Almost have to beat Central in January I think.

Where are Calderdale gonna get these 5-6 points from I think If the lose to Bradford Central they will be 1/100 to go down still very interesting at the bottom it will be a lot more clearer after 2 more games
