Yorkshire League Update

Yorkshire League Update

Dear All

Firstly can I apologise that I managed to miss not one but two updates; one caused by a busy work schedule and the other by a bout of ill health. This report will hopefully some of the action since and we can get back on track from this point.

Woodhouse Cup

The key result came in the second round when Bradford A pulled off victory against Sheffield A. Bradford A have faltered slightly since, losing to Rose Forgrove in the fourth round. This means that York RI A are accelerating to the top of the table with a two point buffer over Sheffield A and Rose Forgrove A in second and only five game points dropped so far. The relegation battle currently has Alwoodley A and Sheffield B in the drop zone with only a solitary draw each; however the draws were scored against different teams and there is a lot of fight in the relegation battle yet. Calderdale A are surprisingly close to the drop zone a third of the way through the season.

IM Brown

The second division is always the most fun to watch, however there are no surprises so far with the two relegated teams; Bradford Central and York RI B; rising to the top of the pile with four from four. In third place Wakefield A might be back in the promotion fray after a few years stuck in mid table. Bradford B and Pontefract currently sit in the relegation zone. Most players should be aware of the circumstances in which Pontefract’s match with Hull DCA B was abandoned and the match will be rescheduled for a later date.

Silver Rook

Doncaster were always going to be heavy favourites and have risen to the top of the table although York RI D have also won both of their matches to date.

Looking Ahead

10th December looks to be a relatively quiet week in the Woodhouse Cup with no key clashes although given the strong start of both Huddersfield and Rose Forgrove A their individual encounter could be interesting. There are also no real key fixtures in the IM Brown which means that the spotlight could be on the first meeting of the two unbeaten Silver Rook teams although York RI D have to navigate a postponed fixture against Alwoodley B first.

    Hi Andrew,
I would like to recommend John Kerrane (Hebden Bridge) an award rom the Yorkshire Chess Association or the ECF for all of his hard work with his juniors. This is well overdue. He also runs the Hebden Bridge as club captain and hosts the Calderdale Evening League’s Individual Championship.
