We continue our tour of the local leagues in Leeds. Leeds City Centre Chess Club have dominated in recent seasons, their location in the heart of Leeds proving an attractive proposition for many strong players including GM Gawain Jones and IMs Richard Palliser and Andrew Muir.

This season, new kids on the block Moortown have proved to be their strongest challengers. They played each other in a crucial fixture in the beginning of December. Peter Rooney held Matthias Gantner to a draw while Richard Hardy scored a crucial victory over the experienced Simon Deighton. Leeds CCCC were a man short and this proved pivotal as Moortown went to the top of the league before Christmas.

Pudsey Chess Club are the only team to have taken points off Moortown this season scoring a 4-1 victory early on in the season. Today’s puzzle is taken from this match.

The Winning Move

Bak vs Hardy, Leeds 2015 How did White take advantage of Black’s weaknesses? Last week: 48…Nxg4? 49.Rb5+ Ka4 50.Rc5 (Threatening Bb3+ and Ra5 mate) 50…Rb6 51.Bf7! and the dual threat of Be8+ with mate and Rc4+ winning the knight cannot both be parried.
