Over the last year, the 4NCL has started organising high-quality Congresses around the country. Their 6th event took place in Wetherby in early January during the weekend that the popular York Congress used to occupy.

39 players contested the Open. Round 2 provided two surprise results with John Jarmany and Nicholas Savage beating the 1st and 3rd seeds respectively. This cleared the way for 2nd seed Martin Brown (York University) and he took full advantage. Brown reached 4/4 thanks to victory over 4th seed Edmund Player and held a draw in the final round to win outright with 4.5/5. Yorkshire Chess President Jim Burnett (Doncaster) was one of the three players in joint second on 4/5.

The Major was jointly won by four players including Robert Dean (Pudsey), Geoffrey Brown and Shane Frith (both Sheffield). Neil Griffiths (Leeds) shared 1st place in the Minor with Ian Johnson.
