The 4NCL (Four Nations Chess league) is the premier chess league of the country. There are a numbered of heavily sponsored teams and White Rose have competed successfully against those, despite a limited budget, to qualify for the European Championships in the last 7 seasons.

White Rose 1 had an excellent second weekend, winning both matches. They are very well placed now to qualify for the championship play off. Round 3 saw a comfortable win over the dangerous Grantham Sharks. James Adair led the team with another victory with former Leeds University PhD student Iain Gourlay, and Richard Weaving securing both match points.

The second match against Cambridge University was a resounding win for White Rose with 6 players winning their games. Adair won his fourth game of the season to keep his 100% record intact. Other White Rose winners included Scottish Grandmaster Colin McNab, York based International Master Richard Palliser, Iain Gourlay, Matthias Gantner a Swiss FIDE Master studying at Leeds University and England Women’s international Sue Maroroa-Jones.
