Division 3 North of the Four Nations League moved into the final stages last weekend at the Cedar Court Wakefield. Four teams have emerged as front-runners for the two coveted promotion spots.

Alba are new to the 4NCL this season and as their name suggests, all their players are from north of the border. They have been heads and shoulders above all their rivals, boasting four FIDE Masters and many other strong players. Manchester Manticores 1 are currently best placed to take the second spot but Broadlands and Bradford DCA Knights A are also in with a strong chance.

Bradford’s chances took a slight blow last Sunday as they could only manage a draw against Spirit of Atticus B. Draws by Andrew Drabble and Jim Nicholson were followed by a crucial win by Phil Watson in a complicated and unclear struggle. Two wins by Spirit of Atticus put them 3-2 up with one to play. Fortunately for Bradford, Greg Eagleton was able to keep his composure and stamina to grind out a win after six and a half hours play to ensure a draw for Bradford. The final set of fixtures take place over May Day Bank Holiday Weekend in Crewe.
