Wakefield played host to the 8th 4NCL Congress last weekend. The 4NCL have started organising weekend congresses all over the country and this is the second time that Wakefield has played host to one. There was a healthy entry of nearly 130 players across three sections, a significant increase from last year.

GM Mark Hebden has been grinding the weekend circuit for about 40 years and is currently in a rich vein of form. He won the Open section with a perfect score of 5/5 despite coming up against some strong resistance, particularly against John Jarmany. Daniel Abbas finished second with 4.5/5 while Jarmany and Martin Brown tied for third with 4/5.

The Major contained lots of evenly-matched experienced players. 4/5 was sufficient for victory with four players tying for first: Mark Whitehead, Mitchell Burke, Richard Porter and Darren Laws. Chris Fraser and Keith Emerton both scored 4.5/5 to secure a share of first place in the Minor. Ian Haley and Neil Griffiths shared 3rd place.
