The last round of fixtures saw all the champions being declared in all three divisions of the Yorkshire League.

In the Woodhouse Cup, York RI A are champions with a round to spare. Harrogate A came dangerously close to springing an upset but it wasn’t to be as York ran out 4.5-3.5 winners. Sheffield A dispensed with Bradford A 6-2 to assure themselves of a clear second, three points behind York RI A but three ahead of the rest of the field. Calderdale A defeated Leeds CCCC A 5-3 to move strongly into third. At the other end, Bradford Central are now relegated while Alwoodley A move into a dead heat with Harrogate A. York RI B lost 2-6 to Rose Forgrove A and remain in the relegation zone, two points adrift of Alwoodley A and Harrogate A. York RI B must defeat Bradford A to have any chance of survival.

The IM Brown saw Sheffield B defeated Pontefract 5.5-2.5 while York RI C beat Rose Forgrove B 4.5-3.5 which meant that Sheffield B extended their game point lead by a point to two points going into the final round. Calderdale B defeated Harrogate B 5 1/2-2 1/2 but are now out of the promotion battle. Sheffield B and York RI C will go up and it only remains to be seen which team will lift the Shield at the end. By contrast the relegation battle is finalised; York RI D lost 2.5-5.5 to Wakefield A and will go down with Harrogate C. In the Silver Rook, Sheffield D won their home fixture against Dewsbury 5-3 and are champions for 2015-16.

The Winning Move

Plump-Jeje, Sheffield 2016. How did White take advantage of Black’s last move 34…Qe8? Last week: 25.c4! attacks the rook and allows the bishop to come into b4 with decisive effect. If 25…Rd8 or 25...bxc4, 26.Bb4+ wins the knight on f6. Black’s choice of 25…Rxe5 was no better and Black soon lost.
