Yorkshire took on Greater Manchester in the Under 160 County Championship Quarter Final which was hosted by Halifax Chess Club at their home venue the Lee Mount Club. Yorkshire had excellent strength in depth and had a rating advantage of their opponents on almost all of the 16 boards.

Peter Mason got Yorkshire off to a flying start with a win inside one hour. Further wins by Dave Shapland and Paul Johnson led to Yorkshire taking a 5-3 lead after the first 8 games, but it was the next hour that was going to prove critical.

Boards 6 to 14 all ended decisively and it was here that the Yorkshire team did the most damage. Although they had to endure a couple of losses, positional wins by Colin Procter and Mike Ashdown and more tactical victories for Robert Dean and Will Boothman ensured that Yorkshire were out of sight.

Yorkshire’s 9.5-6.5 win means that they move onto the semi-finals where they will be facing Essex on 11th June. Next week’s article will feature Yorkshire’s Open team.
