Jonathan Swallow (1952-2016) recently passed away aged 63. Jonathan was a valued member of Ilkley and Harrogate Chess Clubs for many years. He was known for combative style of play and was never afraid to shirk a challenge.

He was captain of Ilkley A in the Bradford league for only one season in 2011/12, but this proved to be a very successful tenure as Ilkley won the Division 1 title. Jonathan was also a key member of the Yorkshire Under 160 county team, which has won five titles since 2006. On an individual level, he achieved many notable results against strong opposition including a recent game where he had Matthew Webb (graded 224) squarely on the ropes before Webb swindled a draw.

Outside of chess, Jonathan served in local government and was a champion of the rights of council employees, especially in Northern Ireland. He contributed to the negotiations of the Good Friday Agreement with regards to human rights and equality considerations. He was also a lover of classical music and opera.
